The Parliamentary Forum on Small Arms and light Weapons in cooperation with the Secretary General of the Latin American Parliament held an inter-parliamentary Conference on citizen security with a specific focus on Latin America on the 14th and 15h of may, 2009.
“The design of the public Security Policies”
Over 40 parliamentarians from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, German, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mozambique, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru, Spain, Sweden, Uruguay and Venezuela attended the two-day conference that was hold in the National Congress of Argentina.
In addition, Government representatives from Ecuador, Honduras, Peru, Spain, Sweden and Venezuela as well as representatives from research institutes and civil society also participated.
The main topics of discussion were:
- Proliferation on small arms as an obstacle to development
- Public safety
- Security Control
- Arms Control
- Parliamentary initiatives in the region
- Creating a democratic security model
In the final session a declaration encompassing all topics above mentioned was adopted by the participants. The ‘Buenos Aires Declaration’ as well as a full report will be available shortly.
