Parliamentary Workshop on Halting Trafficking of Arms, Drugs and People

New York, USA, June 15, 2010; An inter-parliamentary conference on the topic “Parliamentary Workshop on Halting Trafficking of Arms, Drugs and People: The Role of Parliamentarians” was held at the Permanent Mission of Norway to the United Nations in New York, USA. The conference was organized by the Parliamentary Forum of Small Arms and Light Weapons in cooperation with the Parliamentarians for Global Action (PGA). The side event was held during the Fourth Biennial Meeting of States (BMS4) to Consider the Implementation of the Programme of Action to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All Its Aspects in the UN.

 

More than 20 parliamentarians from Europe, Latin America, Africa and South West Asia participated in the event, together with experts, representatives from the civil society, and other governmental representatives.

 

The side event was mainly dedicated to promote an inter-parliamentary exchange between regions on the issue of trafficking with firearms, drugs and people, and how these are interlinked. Attention was also drawn to the role of parliamentarians in the work of reducing such trafficking and thereby enhancing human security around the globe.
